During the first week of the NFL season, several players with Utah ties made game-changing plays, from long touchdowns to key turnovers.

A sampling of the top efforts from locals during Week 1:

1. Former Utah quarterback Alex Smith completed 28 of 35 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns, including TD passes of 75 and 78 yards in the second half, as Kansas City rallied to beat defending Super Bowl champion New England 42-27. Smith had a QB rating of 148.6 in the game, which leads the NFL.

In the fourth quarter, Smith led the Chiefs to three touchdown drives, of 90, 60 and 79 yards. Kansas City averaged 19.1 yards per play on those scoring drives.

2. Former Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei started at defensive tackle and recovered a fumble for Carolina in a 23-3 win over San Francisco. He also had three tackles, a half-sack and a quarterback hurry.

Lotulelei recovered a Brian Hoyer fumble at the San Francisco 42, setting up Carolina’s first touchdown of the game. He also combined with Julius Peppers to sack Hoyer for a 4-yard loss early in the second quarter and had an assisted tackle for no gain on fourth-and-1, giving the Panthers the ball back right before halftime and helping Carolina score a field goal.

3. Former Southern Utah star Miles Killebrew returned a fourth-quarter interception 35 yards for a touchdown, his first career pick-six, in Detroit's 35-23 win over Arizona. Killebrew also had a pair of solo tackles, a special teams tackle, a tackle for loss and two pass deflections.

4. Former Utah State linebackers Nick Vigil and Kyler Fackrell both caused turnovers as well. Vigil started at strongside linebacker for Cincinnati and had 10 total tackles, including five solo stops and a special teams tackle, while intercepting his first career pass in a 20-0 loss to Baltimore. Vigil intercepted Baltimore’s Joe Flacco on a tipped ball on the second play of the third quarter, setting up the Bengals at the Baltimore 26-yard line. He also had a pass deflection.

Fackrell recovered a fumble in the third quarter that set up Green Bay’s first score in a 17-9 win over Seattle. He recovered a Russell Wilson fumble at the Seattle 6, and the Packers turned it into a touchdown on the next play. Fackrell also had a quarterback hurry and a special teams tackle.

5. Former Utah State running back Kerwynn Williams was the lone Utah tie to score a touchdown during the first week, taking a 3-yard run in for a touchdown in Arizona's 35-23 loss to Detroit. Williams' score gave the Cardinals a 17-9 lead, and he rushed for 10 yards on five carries in relief of an injured David Johnson and added one reception for 2 yards, two kickoff returns for 46 yards and a punt return for 0 yards.
