You can't have a QB constantly making bad decisions and expect to beat a good Pac 12 team. You'd be OK against the 3 cupcakes we started the season with but against Pac 12 competition we need a healthy Tyler Huntley. You also MUST score touchdowns when you have a first and goal at the 2 yard line. Field goals aren't going to cut it.

The difference between Utah and BYU fans is that the Cougar fans know they aren't having a good year and the Utes think they are.

Isn't it interesting how the first Ute loss (to a team that returned to the rankings as a result) opens the floodgates of coog fans' pent-up frustration--often resulting in inane comments?

I agree. Troy Williams afraid to run with the ball on the read option. So often he is wide open to run but he won’t do it. He’s not a very good passer either. I just don’t see him leading Utah to many wins, and I hate to say that but it’s true.

The Utes were undefeated because they started off with a weak schedule. Now they have played a mediocre Stanford team and lost. They will probably finish in the middle of the PAC12 south and will only have the BYU victory to define their season. The whole state of Utah is having a Down year in D1 Football

The Utes are a worse team than last year. Normally reliable special teams is making big mistakes. The defense is still good but the offense has digressed - significantly. Red Zone offense is horrendous. The run game is inconsistent at best. The "explosive offensive scheme" of Troy Taylor remains to be seen. The play calling is highly suspect. Williams is a poor decision maker and inaccurate passer and can't hardly run. Let Bateman have a shot at throwing the ball. Once the Utes played some not patsies (i.e. the teams in the pre conference that have a combined 3 wins) they got exposed for who they really are - a mediocre PAC12 team. The only difference from the past 3 years is we learn this in early October and not in November.

Guaranteed losses are @USC, @Washington and versus WSU.
    Probable losses @Oregon.
    Toss UP - vs UCLA
Probably wins vs ASU, vs Colorado.

So the Utes will likely go 3-6 or possibly if they are lucky 4-5 in conference. That is 2, possibly 3 more wins, and a disappointing 6-6 or maybe 7-5. Cactus bowl - how exciting :(

If Huntley can't answer the bell yet, i would give Bateman a chance over Williams. Troy Williams struggles big time. Defenses tee off against him because he is so tepid and hesitant in the pocket. His decisiveness when to run or not to run is severely lacking.

Utah needs a playmaker at QB to be a good or great team. Williams is not that guy.

USC , Washington , Washington State , Oregon and Arizona St. all losses .... Ucla and Colorado toss ups .... Absolutely no running game so the rest of these teams will just load up for the pass just like a poor defensive Stanford team did last not get ... just my thoughts and please no comments about the Y because we all know that they are absolutely terrible this year !

Two costly decisions by Williams, showing why he was second on the list. The offensive line is still coming together. Troy Williams' offense is still awaiting consistent execution by the players. My prediction, predicated upon Huntley's return, is that Utah hits its offensive stride in the next three games. If it does, it could be a VERY good team.

You and your fan base know what it's like to lose 5 in a row (you are currently 1-5, remember). However, Utah won't hit that dubious distinction. And even you have something to look forward to, since after your next game/loss, you can feast on six extremely light cupcakes making you bowl eligible.

That receiver is the real deal. Great hands and fast. That one-handed grab was sensational. He just stuck his hand out and caught it as if it were a baseball. I'm glad he received a second chance and hope he continues doing well right into the NFL. He won't be around next year, but someone will step up.

Tough loss, but in my book the Utes are way ahead of schedule with the new offense. As I predicted early on, next year is the year. Not to say they can't do well the remainder of this year. SC is beatable. I kept feeling they would come back right to the end. Go into overtime and who knows? The on-side kick was close.

The Utes never quit in this game. They never gave up. Character was front and center.

Targeting has to be called, but I don't in any way feel those two tackles were intentionally targeting. It's really difficult to avoid sometimes, especially the second one. It's even more difficult when the offensive player lowers his helmet. Just glad Troy didn't get hurt.

I was impressed with Stanford's defense and Love is something else. SC does not have a player like Love. But they did beat Stanford in LA by eighteen points. It will be a tough game.

    Tough loss. Good comeback try.

I don't generally read stories or comments on the Utes, but I was told that if the U lost to Stanford their would be a flood of gloating BYU fans. Thought I might see for myself. Well, not so much. Maybe, just maybe, the Utes are not as important to BYU fans as BYU is to Ute fans.

The Utes (rightfully) complain that some BYU fans always have the "If (fill in the blank) then we would have won" excuse. And then I read that same excuse from Ute fans. Like BYU fans should, your team lost, get over it. Yes, BYU fans do this A LOT but it is just a meaningless exercise. Do all the excuse making and "if, then" arguments and see if the score changes.

I agree with the criticism of BYU for doing this but the Ute should stop, also. It just denigrates the other team and suggests that if things went different there would have been a win. Without understanding that if things went different, then the opposing team would have responded in a different way and probably still won.

Utes go 3-4 or 4-3 in the rest of their PAC-12 schedule, generally disappoint fans and new OC can't solve the "red zone" issues to get that key win to contend for a division title. The end result is a mediocre bowl.

Let's be honest since some fans want to bring BYU into this. UofU, BYU, and USU are awful this year. The state of Utah will not be making any national waves this year. The list as to why can go on forever I am sure. In short UofU replaced a lot of players and their starting QB played and ended up a like Hill this season. BYU has a QB problem it seems when BYU get a throwing QB they put to much pressure on themselves and from fans and seem to go downhill after their first year. USU did rebuild itself, but seems to be on a slow track to being awful again. With all the NFL players taking a knee and even beating up those who will still stand for the flag football is a loss for me this year. I will have some free time for other things are that are more positive then football is.
There is also BYU rugby to look forward too.
Until Utah football gets in act together and NFL players stop disrespecting my country flag I am out. See ya

Stanford is clearly superior to the UU. Exceedingly superior. Infinitely superior. The final score is no indicator of how much better Stanford is, really. Nor the fact that UU had a chance. Wrong. We know they won by X points .... but that is in no way, let me repeat myself - no no no no no no no no nooooooooo way - an accurate representation of absolutely any little itsybitsy teensyweensy iota smidgen miniscule anything. Really. We know how much better they really are. So much it can't be quantified, by man, beast, or machine. At least 50. Probably more. Makes my head hurt to even contemplate. More than X, anyways.

And if you are a yoo-yoo fan and disagree, well, then, hardeeharhar, we all know what that says about you. Lots. We all know.

  • What To Do Salt Lake City, UT
    Oct. 8, 2017 8:22 a.m.

It was a great game, It was fun and the fans had a great time. We all knew that there were four things that had to happen to be competitive, 1. Contain Love - Utah did a great job of doing that with one exception = 7 points. 2. Williams need to look down field and hit open receivers - better but not accurate enough. 3. Moss had to establish the run game. Great first half with 7 points. 4. production in the Red Zone again first half was great.

Second half was rough, Williams made huge mistakes that he typically does not make two interceptions. The play calling to leave the run game and go to the air was a mistake. But the big one that took the wind out of the Utes was the none production in the Red Zone - 95 yards without a TD.

So, end the end the Utes, stayed in the game, not enough to win. To many errors of judgment and poor performance from the long snapper.

At least it gave the team down south something to smile about as they head into the worst record in 40 years and they will lose there 6th in a row next week but hay the BYU trolls all apparently know how to yell over rated. Not so. Utah is and will continue to be a competitive team in the Pac 12! GO UTES!!!!!!!

Tough loss. Among many factors, I think QB play was the biggest reason Utah lost. You can tell why Williams lost the starting job. He is just inconsistent.

The one thing that drove me crazy was the inability to score a TD in a 1st and goal situation on the 1 or 2 yard line. Unacceptable. That could have changed the course of the game drastically.

Defense was solid though. They shut down Love pretty well all game long, minus 2 or 3 runs where he got loose. Hats off to the defense for bailing the offense out numerous times.

And please get a new long snapper!

Live and learn, start preparing for USC. We can beat those guys.

Overrated? You mean like all those years (long ago) when BYU was ranked in thanks to a brand name now almost seemingly fading? Ute fans used to hear the Y fans claim superiority because of top 25 finishes despite coming up short 54-10 head to head. I also remember Indy schedules being super weak in the earlier years of independence. And wins despite a very lacking schedule meant a brand name (BYU) was ranked. In 2011, Utah was clearly better in September and at seasons end. But polls meant something to BYU fans then. Me, before all of that, I ripped the bias of the BCS and I didn't sing a new tune when my Utes crashed the BCS twice. So there, I pat my own back on a night where I type for therapy after a Ute loss, as I stay awake nursing my super special 16 year old dog after a seizure.

Alex wasn't the first choice at long snapper. It has come to that via injury and other scholarship factors. Tough game for us fans to swallow but it's tougher on the Ute players because they care, play hard and willingly sacrifice physically win or lose. That is a huge plus for the program. Be thankful for the attitude/culture the Utes have. To bounce back, the Utes need to move on with a fired up attitude to play USC. Utah fans can bounce back from this also. Believing trickles down to the team. Advice to Troy Williams. Don't fret about being praised or condemned. Whatever time you have left on the field (your senior year), keep saying your prayers, play with no regrets, have faith in the throws you can make and let the chips fall where they may. Put team first and live with the results. That said, beat USC, and the life in Ute Nation fires up again. Much to play for. Head to head South match up next week.

Look we all want Huntley, but what happened to next man up? All these excuses over a loss makes us sound zoobish. The Utes lost a game they could have won because of more than Williams. Not having Fitts and Anae off the edge hurt as well. Stanford had time to throw on 3rd and longs. Our pass protection on the other hand could be better. Not pounding the ball into the end zone from the one yard line stings. The offensive line needs work but they are getting better. It takes time. Utah is replacing four NFL Draft picks there alone. That is unheard of. The offense as a whole is still trying to find itself. Huntley (Superman) is out for now. But if a dynamic Huntley is our only reason for winning and losing then we have trouble. Yes, a great QB is a huge factor. Stanford doesn't have one. They have Love. Utah had some great RBs in past years. Now, Utah has Carrington. Williams needs to be better but I am thankful to have him as a backup. Would you rather have the cast of QBs down south right now? Support Williams Ute fans and don't look for someone to condemn. Williams is sulking some. He sometimes turns that into a chip on his shoulder. Fine line there. Let's move on to USC.

If Huntley, Fitts, and Anae had been healthy, I believe Utah would have won.

    Oct. 8, 2017 12:42 a.m.

Troy Williams looks lost. When is Tyler Huntley coming back??

While he does have an arm, Williams is somewhat inaccurate and he hesitates forever. His decision making with the quarterback run is atrocious. His playmaking ability is nonexistent. How many times do you see him run and leave a 3rd and two or 4th and one when he could have gotten the 1st?? He just is not a gamer. This is why Washington benched him and released him long ago, he is a very average college quarterback, not a playmaker or winner.

During spring ball i called it. I said Tyler Huntley would be named the starter. The vast majority of Utah fans said no way. Sure enough everyone can see the difference now. Huntley is a playmaker, difficult to defend and brims with confidence. Of course defenses tee off against Williams, because he sits in the pocket Forever and begs for a beating. He is so predictable and looks lost half the time.

I hope Bateman gets a shot next week if Huntley can't answer the bell yet. Utah's offense is the walking dead with Williams. Utah still wins 7 or 8 games with Williams, but with Huntley they have the potential to win the conference.

A tough loss but still very proud of this team. They fought and failed, but Xert saw real heart out there and there is no shame in losing to a team like Stanford. Congrats to them for playing really well on the road (especially their defense). I thought Stanford might be the better team coming in based on having played a really good schedule, but that the Utes might win with a stout d and playing at home. Too bad, but I think this will still be a strong season for the Utes. Learn from this and play hard when things aren't going your way and you might get an unexpected win or two. Go Utes!!!

    Huntley - 73%
    Williams - 47%

It is clear why Huntley won the job. If Huntley plays tonight, I believe the outcome is much different. With Huntley gone, Troy Taylor loses 30% of his playbook, if not more. What a shame.

Hopefully Huntley returns next week. Go Utes!

i know williams tried hard and competed, but he just isn't a dynamic quarterback. no doubt in my mind that if huntley plays tonite, utes win easily.

that said, how about we give it up for the utah front 7 on defense. for the most part, they held one of the most electric college running backs i have ever seen in check. think he was tackled for a loss 5-6 times, but when he gets a crease~~look out.

interesting game to watch and utah had its chances.

No matter what the final score, one thing is certain. Kyle Whittingham's son, Alex, has to be replaced as their long snapper. Any other kid with half his bad snaps would've been benched 2 games ago.
