SOUTH SALT LAKE — A 16-year-old boy shot on a South Salt Lake sidewalk as he walked home from school Tuesday has died.
South Salt Lake police confirmed that the boy passed away just after midnight on Wednesday.
While police have not officially released the boy's name, several social media posts and a GoFundMe page have identified him as Alan Hernandez Lopez.
"Alan was a loving and sweet boy. He helped at home as much as he could, taking care of his siblings and working part time to assist his mother," the fundraising site says.
He is survived by his mother, two younger sisters and an older brother, according to the website.
The fatal shooting was one of two on Tuesday in Salt Lake County that happened within 30 minutes of each other. Police said there was no evidence linking the two incidents.
In South Salt Lake, Lopez was shot just after 4 p.m. near 300 East and 3100 South. No arrests have been made and no motive for the shooting has been released.
"R.I.P Alan. Fly high. You were such a positive person, and we were supposed to hang out soon," one girl wrote on social media. "You were taken from us too soon."
"This dude was always happy no matter what. He was a great person to talk to all the time. RIP Alan. You will be missed," wrote another.
Shortly after that incident, another shooting with multiple injuries was reported near 3510 W. Parkway Blvd. in West Valley City.
Charles Baker, 49, of California, was killed. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the torso and a 38-year-old man was shot multiple times, according to West Valley police. One of the victims remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday, but police declined to say which one. The other was stable, police said.
A 15-year-old boy had been taken into custody and booked into juvenile detention in connection with the shooting, West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said Wednesday. She said the boy is believed to have "fired a gun" during the incident. Vainuku did not know if the teen was the only person who fired a gun or if he hit anybody. It was unknown what charges the 15-year-old is being investigated for.1 comment on this story
Detectives determined there was some sort of altercation just prior to the shooting "involving multiple people, including juveniles and adults," Vainuku said, adding that the three who were shot were among the group.
The relationship between the three men who were shot was not immediately known. Vainuku said there is no solid evidence connecting the shooting to gang activity, but it has not been ruled out.
Baker had been staying with friends at the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call police at 801-840-4000.
