SALT LAKE CITY — It's a modern-day fairytale with a twist, and now it's heading to an even bigger audience.

BYUtv and Paramount Worldwide Television Licensing and Distribution announced on Wednesday that Paramount has acquired the international rights for BYUtv's new scripted series "Dwight in Shining Armor." The show will be featured for licensing to international broadcasters beginning at LA Screenings this month, according to the press release.

"'Dwight in Shining Armor' is a terrific example of the kind of broadly appealing, original content that platforms around the world are looking for," Dan Cohen, president of Paramount's Worldwide Home Entertainment and Television Distribution, said in a press release.

Set in Woodside, a fictionalized California town, the show follows Dwight, a modern high schooler, and Gretta, the gothic princess he's accidentally awakened, as they fight off the medieval villains threatening Gretta.

"The first idea, of a guy waking up a sleeping princess, that's the fun romantic comedy feature," show co-creator LeeAnne Adams told the Deseret News in a 2018 article. "But once we busted it loose, and realized it could be more than just the princess — that there could be a whole world that was awakened with her — that's when the idea became a series. That's really when we decided we had a TV show on our hands."

"Dwight in Shining Armor" walks the line between ancient fantasy and the modern world, balancing the two. Show co-creator Brian Adams told the Deseret News in a 2018 article that they imagined what might happen if medieval fantasy-like creatures and people showed up at a modern high school.

"We honestly think that if an ogre showed up to our kids' school, people would be like, 'Oh, wow, that's an interesting choice of hairstyle — isn't that great, the way he's expressing himself?'" Brian Adams said.

The 10-episode first season of “Dwight in Shining Armor” premiered on BYUtv in March of this year, with the network airing 10 more episodes for a second season this fall.

"Dwight in Shining Armor" stars Sloane Morgan Siegel as Dwight, Caitlin Carmichael as Gretta and Joel McCrary as Gretta's court magician Baldric. Co-starring are Danielle Bisutti ("God of War") and Evan Hofer ("Lethal Weapon").

The new partnership with Paramount provides the family-friendly show with more opportunities, and certainly more viewers, according to BYUtv Managing Director Michael Dunn.

"I can't think of a better partner than Paramount to help us share 'Dwight in Shining Armor' with the rest of the world," he said.
