I am saddened by the lack of leadership of our two senators. They simply joined with others with an excuse to avoid supporting the president and more importantly our country. Others may say they were sticking up for the constitution but that is baloney pure and simple. I was knew that Romney would be supportive of anything the mainstream politicians pushed and I was right. That was the last vote he will receive and Lee, as good as he can be failed on this one terribly. Guessing at what the democrats will or won't do in the future is not how to vote on issues today. This is one of the most important matters our nation has come up against and if we lose at this point we have lost it in the long run

How is it possible so many people misunderstand what Romney and Lee are doing?

I will spell it out clearly so it cannot be misunderstood.

This is NOT about border wall funding.
This is NOT about going against immigration reform.

This is ENTIRELY about standing up for the Constitution of the United States.

Utah's Senators are doing exactly what Utahns everywhere entrusted them to do, which is to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America, and to look out for Utah's best interests. There is nothing more important than preventing a sitting president from declaring a national emergency according to his whims. Why? Because that president might soon be a democrat who decides to declare a national emergency against firearms, capitalists, or religion. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!

“It is common knowledge that most illegal entry into our country happens at Legal Port of Entries.”

It may be common knowledge. But it’s 100% inaccurate As stated very clearly in the latest report by the border patrol agency. Their numbers were very clear involving the border. That more human illegal entry happens away from ports of entry. More human trafficking happens away from ports of entry. More drugs are brought into the USA away from ports of entry. These numbers and facts were clearly stated in the last reports from the BPA. What you have stated is 100% false, and was a statement made first by a CNN report, and somehow, lefty politicians, and many others have latched on to it trying to pass it off as a true, which it is not. As proven by the men and women who work the border. On a side note, border patrol agents want a wall, also contradictory to Lefty reports. And why do they want it? Because it will help them do their jobs and apprehend more illegal border crossers, drugs, traffickers, etc., more cameras will not. When was the last time you saw a camera apprehend someone? Spend the money right, on a wall!

Good old Mitt. He always was a "never Trumper". But he fooled most of Utah's voters to vote him in. NOT me. He always had been a Rino Republican like McCain. He discredited himself during the 2016 campaign by shocking remarks about Trump. It was do out of character , or do we thought back then. I didn't believe he supported the Trump conservative agenda back then and he had now proven who he really is. He takes every opportunity to vote against what's best for our country. He's really a piece of work. You must wonder how much more damage he can do.

    @ Flipphone -

    You asked:
" Would all you Democrats be happy if there were no border security? That anyone could come and go as they pleased?"

A polite and clear question. I hope I can answer it in the same way.

No Democrat, no Republican, no Independent, wants an open or insecure border.

We all want our borders to work efficiently in allowing legal trade and legal migration to take place.

Open borders is just one among many lies of the current POTUS.

Congress did not approve all the money Mr. Trump asked for the wall. That is true.

However, Congress approved a lot of money for Border Security.

It is common knowledge that most illegal entry into our country happens at "Legal Port of Entries". Therefore, we need to strengthen Customs and ICE post at the borders.

Nobody is against walls , where they are effective.

Governing requires the most efficient way to use limited resources i.e. money.

The proposed wall will NOT make our borders more secure. The proposed wall is just an exorbitant symbol of the power and influence of a demagogue.

History around the globe, show us that many dictators attempted to preserve their name through massive monuments.

What on earth is in the Constitution to prevent the President of the United States from securing its southern border? He promised to defend America from all its enemies foreign and domestic. At least he is.
What a swamp DC is - but what a great president of the United States we have! Utah always opts out of political activism, hardly anyone reads or cares about the Constitution of the United States, doesn't believe in freedom or defending it at home, blindly follows leaders until it gets a really good one. America always does the right thing, someone said, after trying everything else first. Time, however, seems to be running out.

The whole tenor of this article is based on the assumption that President Trump abused the power of the Presidency in order to declare and emergency declaration to build a wall that for many that feel was unnecessary. I reject that premise. First, the people on the ground who work for the border patrol have stated repeatedly this is a crisis. They also gave recommendations to the Congress for how much was necessary to do their job which included the funding of a wall in key areas of the border. The wall funding was rejected by Congress and so this prompted President Trump to make the emergency declaration. I believe that Senator Lee voted because of the concern he may have had in granting this power to the President even though President Trump had full legal authority to make this emergency declaration. I am not sure what were the motives behind Senator Romney's vote. Needless to say, it is disingenuous for those who voted against the emergency declaration because it was Congress who granted the President the authority to do so and then in turn reject all the experts in the field in voting against the funding of the wall. President Trump simply did what he legally was allowed to.

Not his fault congress has done nothing to fix our immigration laws. I just don’t understand what is wrong with protecting our border so law enforcement can provide for legal immigration. Many many law enforcement applaud the president.

"Rolling On The Floor -- Laughing" contains an expletive?

It is only politics, face saving and brute force that keeps this going. Seems to me the Senators from Utah did the right thing.

They also need to continue to do the right thing, and get a 61 vote veto override of other GOP Senators. Otherwise their current votes are just so much political hot air.

Then they need to use that veto proof collation to enact the Lee, or similar legislation, that would limit a 'national emergency' to 30 days, unless extended by Congress.

But I don't expect that to happen in a million years. The GOP could show they are for principled defense of the Constitution, but I'm not holding my breath.

Therefore, it's not about Democrat or Republican politics (that's for solving the Border Security issue) but about the Constitutionality of Trump's action. I'm happy that Sen. For those who believe GOP Senators and Representatives must be loyal to President Trump--on what basis?

Because he is loyal to them? Not.
Because he's a nice guy? Not.
Because he is following the law, the Constitution? Not.
Because Trump will vote them back into office? Not.

The reality is these Senators and Representatives owe Trump nothing. Nada. Zilch. They owe their constituents a representative voice in Congress. They don't owe Trump anything.

Additionally, these Senators & Reps must uphold the US Constitution. What Trump is doing, or attempting to do, is empower the executive branch beyond what has been established by the Constitution.

What these Senators and Reps owe their constituents is to uphold, sustain and protect the US Constitution.

There is a very, very simple solution to all of this. It doesn't involve congressional appropriation, theft of money from military projects, or environmental roadblocks.

Just tell Trump to use his much-bragged about negotiating ability to get Mexico to build a wall---on THEIR side of the border.

It's so simple, it fulfills his promise, and it solves this alleged emergency. I just don't know why nobody here has suggested it.

Sometimes I don't take the time to comment, but go through and 'like' comments. However, this morning I have to take a few moments to remind y'all that politicians and the coastal elites live behind walls, gates and guards. They make sure they are safe - and don't care about us. They feel virtuous and safe keeping the border open, protecting criminals and illegal aliens, discontinuing the death penalty (except for babies). We working folks are just disenfranchised underclass to them - except when they need our vote. We're too busy working to even notice the slime as they butter us up. They're counting on our ignorance, hoping we won't notice. They'd like us to believe we are racist - when really it's about privileged, 'special' elites lording it over honest, hardworking Americans. They dish it, we take it. We earn it, they take it. Let us eat cake.

poyman - Draper, UT, too bad that Romney and Lee are not Democrats. They would be better people for that.

The Democrats are for education, quality health care, womens and minority rights, and honest government. What has the GOP done? Damaged out world wide reputation? Paid off porn stars? Deflected from truth and honest? (Alternate Facts).

For example, Republicans gave away a trillion dollars to the ultra rich and corportations already flush with cash. Now they are eyeing Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans Benefits, and even robbing from our military in an effort to cover their new deficits and the wall. (The one Mexico was going to pay for?)

Yup, it would be better if those seats were occupied by Democrats, and hopefully as people realize that their own Social Security, and Medicare are under attack, they will elect Democrats.

This "porn star Presidency" has to end. The GOP is losing more and more support.

At least Romney and Lee followed their country, and not the party that is tearing down this nation and it's wealth.

LDS church leaders understand that the real emergency on the border is humanitarian in nature and not crimunal. Too bad other Utahans don't realize that. It's fine to vote against Trump on constitutional grounds, but maybe republicans in Congress should consider rhat more barriers on the border are not the end all answer to border security. It's also time for members of both parties to work together on what's best for the country and not what's best for party. Concerning refugees, to expect Mexico to shoulder the whole burden for caring for these "illegal aliens," who are actually vulnerable human beings, is ridiculous. We have the resources to do it or at least to be a partner with Mexico in resolving the refugee crisis. As far as funding a wall, there is already enough of a barrier on the border, most refugees cross at legal border crossings, and we can't afford it. How much more debt are we going to pass on to our kids and grandkids. It was costly pulling out of the deep recession and wars of the Bush presidency. Time to be done. It's my hope that both sides of the aisle can come together on a forward looking remedy to the humanitarian situation on our border.

Richard B - Obama didn't declare a National Emergency. Trump could have moved funds around within his allocated budget. Chaffetz actually recommended that path to Trump. He could have allocated a few billion a year to get this done. But rather than just using an "executive order", Trump went full monte and decided to declare a "National Emergency" to move the funds across budget silos.

And the funny thing, is Republicans screamed how unconstitutional at that time Obama's acts were. And yet now, 3/4rs of them have no issue. The greater good is worth the means. It's funny how the same song played by the other band all of a sudden is an issue.

Fix the problem, but just within the confines of the constitutional authority granted. Trump in his own announcement declared this wasn't an emergency, but he just wanted it done now - his own words. Once again it is his talking off script that is going to doom his convenient emergency.

The problem is absolutely real. But this isn't the way. Trump has two more budget cycles to get his money, patience, treating others with respect will get him there. Lying... wild claims of Mexico paying, not going to get him there.

In the words of our children and grandchildren, ROTFL... . Which I can not specifically spell out since an expletive is involved. Let us just say, I find the defenders of the President endlessly amusing in their defense of the indefensible.

This is not about a wall really. It is about the personality of a President. Trump campaigned on a specious argument that we needed a great, "beautiful" wall on our Southern border to protect us from all sorts of bad people. He even said Mexico would pay for it. No serious person actually believed this proposal. It was/is hyperbole meant to inflame, not inform.

To assuage his ego, the President decides to declare an "emergency" regarding funding for his compaign promise. You can not disappoint the base!

And the base responds accordingly, slavishly if you ask me.

It is only politics, face saving and brute force that keeps this going. Seems to me the Senators from Utah did the right thing. I will never vote for either of these two again. Both should have to take their families to the border and hang out for a week instead of taking family vacations. The border is a disaster... Trump tried to go through congress to get the money for a wall or a barrier but was unsuccessful (mostly because the Reeps couldn't come together while the Dems are in lock step.

They should be totally ashamed of themselves... In fact they should be writing personal apology letters to the families who have been impacted by illegal immigration.

Yes this is about a border wall. Mike Lee and the rest of the republicans in the house and senate had 2 years to pass funding for the border wall, (Romney 6 months+-). They spent the first 18 months fighting Trump on everything that he did and said, because he wasn't the conventional Politician. Yes he is a little rough around the edges.
Now our Senators say that they support the border. Where were they the past 2 years? They had the White house, House and Senate. Why wasn't it passed then? Don't give me that they need 60 votes to pass a bill. How did we get Obamacare without 60 votes in the senate?
If our 2 Senators are serious about the wall, Either they need to get the funding for the wall now, or They and their Staff need to go to the border and start digging post holes for the wall themselves.

Of the reports given in drugs alone, in total pounds more drugs are collected in areas outside of ports of entry, areas with no walls, FACT. In areas with partial walls the flow has been slowed. FACT. Enough drugs cross the border to kill 56 Million Americans. To quote one politician, “Is that not an emergency?” A wall will slow the flow, if not shut it off. FACT. To those who talk about tunneling under, or climbing over, if you can stop the leak, that’s a good thing. If you can’t stop it it but slow it, that’s a good thing. The wall is a good thing. FACT

Trump ran and won the presidency on the promise of a wall. Romney and Lee vote against the wishes of the majority again.

Trump also claimed that Mexico would pay for the Wall. Tariffs don't cost the sending country, they cost the receiving customers, in this case those in the US.

Drug money is not 'Mexico's', but money paid by those in the US that pay for illegal drugs, again Mexico is not paying for the Wall.

As for the 'majority', given that the recent election made for a significant change in the 'majority' House representation, one can infer that the majority has spoken relative to whatever Trump promised, and whatever Trump and the GOP has done in the past 2 years of their lock tight majority on government.

And now, the majorities in both Houses of Congress have spoken.

The majority of Americans are not 'loving' their decimated health plans, the majority are not happy with their 'tax sop' of perhaps 2 dollars a week, if that.

The majority are disgusted with Trump and the fountain of lies, misstatements, the 'nicknames', the endless tweets that show a complete lack of thinking, planning, and leading.

Other than giving aid and comfort to Nancy, what have you accomplished? The POTUS still has the same authority and you know restricting it won't even be considered in the House. Therefore, any future POTUS is just as likely to use this authority. as if you had rejected this rejection.

    "We need better border security."

The way to get it is to build a border barrier. That's what Trump wants done. The Democrat leadership also wanted a barrier which they voted for several years ago but now are apposed to it. The question is... why? Well, it's not hard to figure. They wanna increase their voter base. An easy way to do it is to let illegals in by the millions... then give them authorization to vote. They don't have to pass a law to do this. Just let states (like sanctuary state California) do it. In California (and perhaps other states now) voting authorization (including federal) comes with getting a driver's license.

"We need new immigration laws. We don't have those today."

we'll never get new immigration laws while the Dems control part of Congress.

"Proud both Lee and Romney are putting the country and constitution ahead of loyalty to Trump."

The Constitution sez the president can veto a Congressional bill. Trump will do that. Then he can get the funding for the wall.

To deny that there a border emergency is utter lunacy. Both Senators have put politics over national security. They have lost my support and vote.

There is no 'national emergency' at the US/Mexico Border. In fact, the numbers show that from 2000 the number of arrests at the border are down by significant numbers.

The areas where there are large populations on both sides of the border have had many forms of barriers and patrolling to limit those wanting to cross outside of the authorized ports of entry.

The places where the barriers are less, are more often dotted with dead bodies of those who have died from exposure to the desert conditions.

The drug trade uses authorized ports of entry, and many forms of hiding contraband, or corrupting officials, to transport their 'product'. A 'wall' does nothing to stop such. In fact, it takes efforts away from those areas.

But this president loves distractions to cover his inadequacies as a leader, or a planner. He failed to lead when the Republicans had a lock tight majority, and now, he is showing even less capability.

    1. That's not true. See the recent resolution regarding Rep Omar's comments. Dems are willing to break against their own if it's the right thing to do.

    2. Isn't disagreeing with your own party a sign of strength, not weakness?

The MAJOR reason the democrats don't want the wall is that it was the biggest promise President Trump made to Americans during his campaign. The democrats don't want him to have any success but stopping the wall is seen as the best way to stop the President and see that he isn't re-elected in 2020. I understand the concern about what the democrats might do in the future but that bridge needs to be crossed when we come to it. If a democrat is elected in 2020 you can kiss the constitution goodbye.

Members of congress are great at arm-chair quarterbacking, pontificating, analyzing, and criticizing . . . but, they haven't done much really productive in literally years. The RINOs managed to sit on their hands long enough to give the House back to the Democrats, and prove that they're essentially of the same ilk. Then we get an actual leader who wants to do something actually productive, and use the U. S. Department of Defense to defend the United States, as opposed to defending Afghanistan, Syria, South Korea, and hundreds of other places; so what do members of congress do? Something very uncharacteristic . . . they start talking about the Constitution, as if that's what we need to suddenly focus on now. Amazing.

All of a sudden, when Speaker Pelosi is in charge, now it's an emergency? His opening foray into presidential politics when he announced articulated his bigotry. The border has and always will be an issue. What is needed in comprehensive compassionate immigration legislation. Yes, there is drugs ,crime and human trafficking. A wall will not stop these activities. All members of the Church of Jesus Christ know the history of discrimination where members were chased back and forth to Mexico. While I have some sympathy/agreement with Mike Lee's concern about the separation of powers and holding the President to his constitutional powers we are, in reality, not much of a constitutional republic any more. Probably even more than even the practice of "living" constitutionalism practiced by the courts the thing that has most eviscerated "government by the people" is the rise and power of the administrative state. Congress has certainly played a key role in transferring unaccountable power to administrative executive agencies that in reality do not answer even to the chief executive. Congress' role has essentially been reduced to that of "handmaiden" to the administrative state-- which is certainly not answerable to the people. It seems as if the Presidency is almost the only vehicle where the voice of the people has any real pull--and that's only because a stubborn fighter outside of the establishment was elected. I support the President's exercise of his emergency powers to take some steps at the border to keep our sovereignty so we don't just become a place on the map without borders governed, unaccountably, by the administrative state.

Today I'm making an exception. After reading the many comments in the DN supporting Senators Romney and Lee I feel hope for the future of the state of Utah. On the other hand, it worries me the amount of comments with no base on truth or reality.

Democracy can only survive with a well informed citizenry. We can disagree, actually, it is expected that we disagree and have diverse points of view. But I think we would agree that we should look for the truth and base our opinion on facts. Same reason there wasn't outrage over the first three Trump did (this is his fourth). All but one of Obama's and Trump's others were standard sanctions reactions. Obama's other one was about the H1N1 epidemic. None of Obama's, or the others by Trump, were based on losing a budget fight and deciding they were just going to do whatever they want no matter what. That's the line that was crossed, bypassing Congress to redirect authorized spending to other projects.

Romney and Lee’s approach is the opposite to “puting politics over security” or I would say “puting politics over country”. They are puting the country first and the politics second, which is what I would hope any sensible and rationale leader would do. They are not against border security, they are against one branch of government usurping the power of another. America is not a kingdom or a dictatorship. When we disagree as a group of people, the majority rules and the minority works within the law to change the majority’s mind. If you are saying that the minority should just change the rules when a decision doesn’t go their way, then you will have a land that does not live by the rule of law and eventually civility will cease.

I agree we need to secure out border. Truly do. But if I were to believe the hyperbole from the far right, that there was truly a national emergency, the President could simply instruct new basis be built along our southern border and place 100,000 troops down there. If there were truly an emergency. Bet Trumps hasn't... because there isn't an emergency.

I'm proud that Utah elected two representatives that will not bend to extremist views and voted for rather for a constitutional solution. Trump supporters seem oblivious to the dangers to their own agenda by allowing Trump's action stand. Just two years ago these very same people were outraged that the then sitting President "abused" his power to use the executive order. This action by Trump opens that door yet even wider.

Remember Trump has spent his first two years trying to wipe out Obama's agenda. Allowing this act to stand opens that door even wider for anyone who follows Trump to unilaterally make massive policy change without any regard towards congress or the will of the people.

How does voting down President Trump's Emergency Declaration do anything to stop him nor any other president from doing the same thing in the future? Romney and Lee's vote isn't about protecting the Constitution. It's about sticking it to President Trump. It creates a double-standard for him when previous presidents going back to 1976 Emergency Declarations Act had this power (that was granted by Congress). To Senator Lee's credit, he proposed legislation to retain the good aspects of the 1976 legislation with a provision to require legislative branch approval. His legislation is appropriate, but his voting down President Trump's use of the power afforded him by Congress in 1976 is wrong. @Thid "partisan of the year" Barker..... and what about Lee... is he one of Romney's Democrat friends too.

Lets he super duper honest here. For two years the Republicans owned the White House, the Senate and the House. Exactly how many solutions made it to a vote, or on to the Presidents desk. The answer would be a whopping zero. Nada. Nothing in two years. The priorities... a tax cut, and a trade war with Canada and Mexico.

Trying to take the high ground here is a bit of a stretch. And it doesn't stop with the last two years. Bush tried to address this problem, and it was his own party that shut down the conversation.

There is enough blame to go around for all. Saying one party is pure here and the other is doing nothing is really a total mischaracterization of reality. Neither has done much to fix this....

From memory, this is the first President that has actually done something other than talk about it to secure the border. It is a pity that the GOP hasn't the courage to stand up and be counted and support the president. It seems that the GOP is more interested in attacking Trump then supporting him, using any excuse to do so.

I must admit I am pleasantly surprised to hear that Lee and Romney have decided to vote in favor of the constitution. It is especially vital right now that the separation of powers remains robust and clearly maintained. Misusing the "break glass in case of emergency" provision for political gain must not stand. Now if they would talk to a few colleagues, ahem, Stewart, Bishop, Curtis, about overriding a veto I'd really be surprised and impressed!

Over the past few decades it is obvious our border protection been weak. We have been betrayed by those we put in charge to protect our country.

Drug trafficking has hurt and killed many of our citizens. Politicians have been lax with enforcing laws and seem to invite drug trafficking.

Sen. Romney could do worse than vote in lockstep with the senior senator, Sen. Lee.

Notwithstanding, this vote does make Mitt look like a weakling. It seems as though he was just looking for an excuse to vote against a bill President Trump supports, and he conveniently found one in Mike Lee's principled position.

If Sen. Romney wants to build a reputation as a strong conservative, he better make sure his statements on border security aren't just lip service. As other commenters have proposed, Mitt: get something done! If you want our respect, build the wall, fix legal immigration, propose a temporary worker program, rationalize DACA, all without giving away citizenship. President Trump can't do it all himself. So roll up your sleeves and show us why you would have been a great president by getting something done.

Congress is like a slow car on a turnpike. It is holding back other cars and needs to be passed. Congress has been sitting on their big moons all these years and Trump went around the slow car. Lee and Romney need to rent a Motel 6 in Nogales Arizona and see what really is going on at the border--roll their sleeves up and participate with the border patrol. However, both are "silver spooned" that this will never happen.

Trump treats the Constitution as something to get around. But Senate Republicans must not allow this to be made into a loyalty test for a Republican President making this a defining issue for his Presidency. The duty of Congress, regardless of party affiliation is to uphold the Constitution. For Senate Republicans, this vote is their moment of truth.

Though highly embarrassing to Trump, what needs to happen is enough Senators vote to override Trump's veto. That would send a very strong and good message to Americans that the Constitution matters and is pre-eminent in American law and politics.

As Romney said, a border barrier is needed, but writing such a thing into law requires following the correct process.

I'm getting old and my memory is a little off, but it seems to me that we wouldn't be here with this problem today if our dear president had just accepted the first offer from the House, but no he had to shut down the country over less money for his border wall. Now he is using executive orders and wanting to rob other organizations for more money (like medicare and medicaid), for his wall. He is going at this all wrong. He is just digging himself deeper and deeper into a hole. I am with Senator Romney on this one. Time to put a halt on this run away train which reminds me of Old Number 9 that was going down that trestle in Virginia in the early 1900's at 90 miles an hour. The train jumped the trestle and crashed below killing the engineer and others. Kind of reminds me of where our country is going today. Let's not let this train get away from us..

Good! Executive over-reach is an extremely dangerous precedent to allow, and it is a pity it has been permitted to go this far before some of our officials are finally willing to stand up to their own party about it instead of just criticizing the opposite party. Whether through abuse of executive orders or through declaring unwarranted "national emergencies," it is dangerous to allow the president to go unchecked and circumvent the separation of powers, no matter which party that president claims to be from and no matter whether or not their political agenda aligns with our own preferences.

The president's use of the emergency declaration IS constitutional (otherwise they would stop it in court) and is a sadly necessary measure to fulfill the campaign promises for which we elected him. Those of his own party who don't support him now will be voted out of office. The argument that this emergency declaration will lead to abuses of presidential power is a red herring because future such actions will be judged against the constitutional authority on their own merits. The rule of law must be paramount in this country or we will have nothing. Immigration (both legal and illegal) will stop because there will be no difference between our nation and those to the south. The socialists want this, of course, because there will be no prosperity and we will all be dependent on them for handouts.

It's unfortunate that there always seem to be a handful of Republicans willing to side with Democrats on important issues, but the inverse doesn't ever seem to happen. That's why over time, the Progressives get their way and impose changes in society.

Sorry Senator, but it's unlikely that a future Democrat President would think back at the time that the Establishment Republicans betrayed Trump and decide they better not impose some sort of Progressive executive order.

Look at what Obama did with DACA, ACA-related mandates, etc... It's interesting that the Senate didn't react to Executive overreach then, outside of a few lawsuits.

Both senators are absolutely correct in their stance. I expected this from Mitt and am pleasantly surprised Lee stood up to Trump.

While portions of the border need physical barriers (as we currently have in many of these places), Trump's battle on this is pure politics. It is executive overreach and cannot be defended. This is the right move.

If Trump wants his wall, he needs congressional approval on spending. To declare an emergency and use a harmless caravan as propaganda is shameful. Let's send troops in the middle of the desert hundreds of miles away from this "dangerous" caravan purely for political grandstanding.

I'm sorry, but this IS a vote against border security, despite Romney's claims. We have had security issues at the border for years, and numerous families have been victimized by crime, drugs, trafficking, and violence as a consequence. All the while, Congress has played politics with the issue, either unable or unwilling to confront the threat. Romney's vote is a vote for more of the same. If the border is controlled, there is latitude to allow for compassionate immigration. If not, we will continue to face a flood of unvetted individuals with unknown goals coming across the border.

Setting a precedent of abusing emergency powers gives future Democratic presidents a blank check to throw away the law whenever they think it's in their interest to do so. This isn't about border security. It isn't about the wall. It's about supporting the Constitution. President Trump's emergency declaration is unconstitutional. How is defending the Constitution being a "RINO"?

We do not want the President to have the power to override Congress anytime he sees fit. Eventually we will unfortunately have a Democrat president again. Do we (Conservatives) really want him or her to have the precedent to declare a national emergency for whatever it is the Democrats want to get done when they fail to do so through the proper channels?

I am glad that we have Senators representing Utah who don't blindly follow an imperfect President but instead boldly defend the Constitution, even when it is unpopular. Totally agree. We need better border security. That is obvious. We need new immigration laws. We don't have those today. Trump has currently authorized nearly $5 Billion dollar to start working on the wall. He can, and should, ask for more funds in the 2020 Fiscal budget.

But claiming this is a "vote in support of Pelosi" completely shows Trump doesn't understand the constitutional issues here. This is more about he versus Pelosi, rather than finding a real solution.

Proud both Lee and Romney are putting the country and constitution ahead of loyalty to Trump. This has nothing to do with loyalties. Just like a parent can reprove their child when they cross a line, and still love and be loyal to them.
